"The harsh, raking light and atmospheric effects found in Aotearoa New Zealand are something I feel compelled to paint. The vast, ever-changing sky and sea are my inspiration with all its dramatic changes and patterns – giving me a sense of peace and stillness, along with a sense of hope and awe.
Through my work I explore the relationship of colour and light, how light appears to shine brighter when a contrasting darkness is also present. Low light at the beginning & end of the day entrances me with the dramatic interplay of lost and found edges.
With the expansive skies, space and scale present in each painting I hope to evoke a personal response encouraging us to consider something larger than ourselves.
The concept of Tūrangawaewae is also important to me: to have my feet firmly planted where I stand. This past year has been about discovering my identity as an artist & as a New Zealander.
In this body of work I was interested in how known geographical detail can be obscured by mist and rain or bleached out by intense low morning or evening sun. The title “Meet Me There” came out of my decision to prioritise quietly sitting outdoors & taking time to listen & reflect."
"This exhibition is an invitation to experience the personal iconography I have developed and added to over my years of making art. I hope to offer a window into a world where personal and universal truths intersect….perhaps create a space for reflection and connection.
Primarily I am a printmaker but recently my practice has extended into mixed media. My work is based in abstract realism where I aim to make sense of my world.
My work has profoundly influenced by street art….the vibrancy and stimulation I experienced in the the many years I visited and worked in New York City.
Making art is my life and passion." November 2024
