Kathryn Carter is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

She is a landscape painter engaged in recording both the local and wider coastal visual conditions in Auckland and Te Tai Tokerau Northland.

While studying architecture at Auckland University Waipapa Taumata Rau, Kathryn was inspired by and had the privilege of studying under the Elam tutors and artists Pat Hanly and Claudia Pond Eyley. They were appointed as her contextual studies and architecture drawing tutors. From this point, outdoor observational sketching became a fundamental part of her professional practice as an Architect and has influenced and underlies all her painting.

This has led to her visual fascination with the transient nature of light and climate and she has spent creative time immersed in the experience of painting the sea coast and landforms of the Tutukaka Coast and Waitemata. For her painting ‘is a reflection and investigation of the changing nature of the outdoor experience’

This immersive process has led her to note that these environments are very fragile and can change very quickly in short timeframes.

Kathryn has been a finalist in 5 national art awards and has won the Marlborough Art prize awarded at the Marlborough Art Awards .She was a judge appointed to the Auckland and Northland jury panel for the National Institute of Architecture Awards 2023 and has had 5 solo painting shows.

She paints in watercolour, acrylic and oil on paper, panel and linen.
